Layers: FAQ
Q: What is the Layers feature?
A: Layers is a precision editing tool powered by Uni-1 that splits an image into separate pieces, like the background, product, and text, so you can isolate and modify just the part you want while keeping the rest of the image intact.
Q: What are the best use cases for Layers?
A: Anyone who needs controlled, surgical edits to an image. Typical use cases include editing a single element (a headline, a product shot, a badge) without disturbing the overall layout or style, and batch work like localizing ad copy across many assets while keeping layout and styling constant.
Q: Can I control which layers get created?
A: Yes, you can describe exactly what should be layered in the optional prompt box when extracting.
Q: Can I group layers together?
A: Yes. Select multiple layers and choose Group. Groups can be moved, hidden, and adjusted as a single unit, and you can expand them to edit individual layers inside.
Q: How do I delete a layer?
A: Select the layer and click the trash icon, or press Delete. You can undo this if it was a mistake.
Q: What resolution are the layers?
A: Every extracted layer is output at 1K or 2K resolution. You choose the resolution when creating layers. While 2k has better resolution, it will also consume more credits
Q: What image types work with the Layers feature?
A: Any image, generated in the Luma app or uploaded. It works across content types including marketing assets, photography, illustrations, anime/comic-style art, and UI/poster designs.
Q: Can I add a brand-new element that wasn't in the original image?
A: Yes, just generate elements with a transparent background and drag them into the layers editor.
Q: Can I change an image’s aspect ratio when working with Layers?
A: Yes. The following aspect ratios are available: 3:1; 2:1; 16:9; 3:2; 1:1; 2:3; 9:16; 1:2; 1:3;
Q: What image formats can I upload?
A: png, jpeg, webp
How many layers can I break an image into?
A: There are two options:
1. The tool splits an image into a fixed number of layers if not specified, this is content-driven. It analyzes the image, plans out the meaningful separable elements, and decomposes it into ordered RGBA layers (each a transparent PNG stacked front-to-back), which then open in a layer editor you can edit individually.
2. You can select what content you want to layer. E.g. Layer text only and not the images. (Recommended)
Is there a limit to how many layers I can have?
A: You can create many layers, but very large numbers can affect performance. Merge or group finished sections to keep things smooth.
Q: Is the Layers feature available with the API platform?
A: Yes.
Q: What are the limitations of Layers?
A: Batch extraction is currently unsupported, requiring you to extract layers from a single image and wait before processing another. Furthermore, rotating or mirroring layers are currently not available.
I made a mistake, can I undo it?
A:Yes. Use Undo (Ctrl/Cmd + Z) to reverse recent changes, including deletes, merges, and reorders.
