Luma Agents: Research Mode

Updated by Martin

Research Mode is the strategic planning layer in Luma. It helps you transition from vague ideas to clear creative direction before spending credits on media generation. It asks targeted questions, surfaces research, references existing board assets, and generates structured planning documents directly on your canvas.

What It Does vs. What It Doesn't Do

  • What it DOES:

    • Guides creative direction: Asks short, focused questions regarding style, tone, format, and target audience.

    • Proposes concrete directions: Offers fully formed concepts based on your input that you can tweak or combine.

    • Leverages board context: Analyzes documents, reference images, and media already on your board to build on work in progress.

    • Surfaces research: Pulls in visual inspiration, competitor benchmarks, and creative trends directly into the chat.

    • Generates actionable plans: Produces structured text artifacts on your board (creative briefs, campaign outlines, shot lists, storyboards, and production roadmaps).

  • What it DOES NOT do:

    • Zero media generation: It does not render images, video, or audio. Execution and asset generation take place strictly in Create Mode.

Simple 5-Step Workflow

  1. Describe the Goal: Start with a rough idea or high-level brief.

  2. Answer Guided Questions: Refine tone, constraints, and scope through a short Q&A.

  3. Explore Directions: Review the concrete concepts suggested by the Agent and choose your favorite direction.

  4. Generate the Plan: Have the Agent generate a structured planning document (like a shot list or brief) on your canvas.

  5. Switch to Create Mode: Transition into Create Mode to begin generating media using the plan you just established.

When to Use (and When to Skip)

  • USE IT WHEN: Starting a new campaign, exploring multiple creative styles, planning multi-shot video projects, or refining a rough concept.

  • SKIP IT WHEN: You already have a completely defined brief, explicit keyframe images, or exact prompts ready for execution in Create Mode.
