Skills in Luma: Overview

Updated by Martin

What Is a Skill?

A Skill is a reusable creative recipe saved for you within the current team. Instead of rebuilding the same prompt, model choice, and settings every time, you save the workflow once (instructions, defaults, references, and rules) and run it again with a single click.

Skills you create are personal to you by default and can be available across your boards in that team. They are not available to other team members unless shared and installed for the team.

A Skill isn't the output itself, it's the reusable process behind it. Unlike a one-off prompt or a fixed template, a Skill tells the agent what to do, in what order, with what tools, and how to evaluate results, and it can branch, chain, or adapt to the specific request.

How the Agent Decides When to Use a Skill

The agent automatically matches your request against every Skill's title and description, whether you name it directly ("make a storyboard") or describe your intent ("plan out the shots for my video"). For simple, single-step requests, like a quick edit or basic Q&A, the agent skips Skills and acts directly.

You can always take control by naming a Skill explicitly, and your prompt always overrides a Skill's defaults. Skills can also depend on each other and chain together (one Skill's output becoming another Skill's input), and the agent manages those dependencies for you.

Practical Skill Patterns

Pattern

What it does

Material Transformation

Reskins objects into materials like glass, gold, or ceramic while preserving shape and framing

Product Lifestyle

Places packshots into styled settings like golden hour or luxury editorial

Character Consistency

Preserves identity and facial features while changing environment, pose, or lighting

Multi-step Image-to-Video

Generates a styled still, picks the best one, then converts it into video

Campaign Variations

Scales one idea into multiple audiences, aspect ratios, or languages

Running a Skill

  1. Select the input asset on your canvas.

  2. Type @ in chat to view available Skills.

  3. Select the Skill, add any required input, and submit.

Example: @material-reskin gold

You can layer custom instructions on top of a Skill's defaults. For example, @material-reskin gold. The eyes should be emeralds.keeps the Skill's locked rules while honoring the extra direction. Presets work the same way: @skillname Run the Golden Hour preset.

Organizing Your Skills

Open Skills from the left sidebar to browse and manage Skill packages. You can search, change the sort order, and filter the page to show packages installed for you, installed for your team, installed on a board, or created by you.

On a board, the Skills panel shows the Skills currently available to the agent on that board, including personal, team, board, and built-in Skills. Open any Skill to see its name, description, and instructions before running it.

Sharing a Skill

Sharing publishes one or more Skills as a package and creates a link you can send to other people. From a board's Skills panel, choose Share, select the Skills to include, add a package name and description, and publish it. You can also ask the agent to publish a Skill for you; it will confirm the package details before publishing.

Your published packages appear on the Skills page. Opening a published package lets you copy its share link again. If you later change the source Skill, update the existing package so the same link serves the new version.

Installing a shared Skill

Open a shared package from its link or from the Skills page. From the Skills page, choose Install for me to make it available to you across the current team's boards, or Install for team to make it available through the team scope. You can also install a package on a specific board and manage that installation from the board.
